Missing boy Nante Niemi, 8, found safe under a log two days after he disappeared while fetching wood on camping trip

A MISSING boy has been discovered hiding underneath a log after he disappeared for two days while fetching wood on a camping trip.

Nante Niemi vanished in the middle of the day during the family’s annual trip to Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The Iron County, Wisconsin boy was found just two miles away from the campsite where he was staying with his family, Michigan State Police said.

He disappeared at around 1pm on Saturday and faced light rain and temperatures as low as the mid to upper-40s while officials searched for him.

“He had braved the elements by taking shelter under a log where he was ultimately found,” officials said. “He is in good health and reunited with his family.”

Officials thanked the over 150 rescue personnel from a variety of departments who assisted with the search.

Nante’s school, which had volunteered to help find the child, shared the announcement and said: “we can’t even adequately express our sincere gratitude.”

“Words can not describe the emotions and joy the students and staff are experiencing at this moment,” the school wrote on Facebook

Nante went missing in broad daylight, causing park officials to jump into action to search for the boy.

Half of his family was searching for firewood while the other half was fishing, MSP said.

He asked his family members to return to the campsite when he disappeared.

During the search, his mom Jessica Buerger told local ABC affiliate WDIO that there was online chatter of parties organizing, but stressed that authorities were the only ones combing the “rough terrain” of northern Michigan.

“Right now, we would appreciate if everyone let law enforcement do their job,” the heartbroken mom previously said.

“The terrain is very rough, and they are doing a great job and need the time and focus to do so.”

Officials also asked that onlookers stay put while they combed the 40 square mile area with K9 units.

There is no cell service in the park, adding stress to the officers’ search.

Their message comes after school officials and law enforcement back in Nante’s hometown have posted on social media offering their support.

“The Hurley School administration is in frequent communication with local authorities,” the school said on Facebook.

“The local police are also aware that we stand by ready with 2 buses of volunteers wanting to go help search.”

Hurley School acknowledged that they have been asked to stay away from the area, but thanked community members for their willingness to participate.
